We thought we’d share some of the great places to visit and adventures to have within about 10 miles of Windhall! We’re so lucky with our location – close to the stunning West Coast of Cumbria on one side, and the fells and lakes of the Western Lake District on the other. From historical wonders to water adventures and finding the best ice cream… here are ten great things to see and do:
-
Step Back in Time at Muncaster Castle: Immerse yourself in centuries of history at this magnificent haunted castle and its beautiful gardens. Explore the Castle, wander through the grounds and catch a bird of prey display at the Hawk & Owl Centre. There is a really good café, gift shop and you’ll find some great events on here.
-
Get an adrenalin rush with water sports: Several local providers offer equipment hire and lessons so that you can have loads of fun and stay safe. West Lakes Adventure is one about 5 miles from us in the Eskdale Valley. One of the most popular activities is ghyll scrambling / canyoning – why not give it a go during a stay with us?
-
Unwind on local beaches: Enjoy the seaside and treat yourself at Mawson’s Ice Cream Parlour – their ice cream is made fresh with dairy from their family farm. If you head a little bit further up the coast, you can wander in the picturesque village of St Bees (several pubs serving food), enjoy the beach and visit the newly opened Beach Road Bakehouse that has Ravenglass Ice Cream and more on offer. It’s offering take-away drinks, bakes and ice-cream at the moment, but will be open to dine in soon.
-
Hike to Stanley Ghyll Force: Discover this impressive waterfall cascading down a dramatic gorge. The numerous pools and surrounding wildlife and flowers make it a photographer’s dream. Find out more here.
-
Explore the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway: Take a nostalgic journey on this historic narrow-gauge steam railway, affectionately known as the “La’al Ratty.” Enjoy scenic views as it chugs through the Eskdale Valley. Grab some lunch at one of several pubs, and you can also check out their cream tea & fizz offering on board (find out more on gift experiences).
-
Discover Roman History at Ravenglass Roman Bath House: Explore the well-preserved remains of a Roman bathhouse, a testament to the area’s rich past. Imagine life in Roman Britain as you wander around the ancient walls.
-
Blengdale Forest: Take a walk through Blengdale Forest, offering lovely forest paths and riverside strolls along the River Bleng, situated close to Gosforth. You can also find the ancient Monks Bridge here.
-
Enjoy a Round of Golf: Seascale and St Bees boasts their own golf club with stunning coastal views. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a beginner, it’s a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors.
-
Picnic at Wasdale Head: Pack a lunch and head to the dramatic head of Wastwater. Surrounded by England’s highest mountains, it’s an awe-inspiring spot for a peaceful picnic.
